The major players in my world are the Kingdom of Nurglundia, the Duchy of Tzeeland, Emirate of Slaavia, and as previously mentioned, the Duchy of Khornwallistein. The latter name being combination of Khornwall and Wallistein, two principal cities, depending on the timeline, of that nation. With a wink and a nod, some will readily recognize the inspiration for these names, but beyond that, one must not assume there is any other similarity or association. Copyrights are a thing and satire covers only so much.
I have chosen real-world influences for each of these nations, mostly stemming from the 17th and 18th centuries, but some aspects go back much further from our own timeline.
Nurglundia is heavily influenced by Eastern European cultures and naming conventions, with some liberties taken by me, including Russia, Poland, and a portion of the Balkans. There is a Prussian influence, but that appears within a satellite minor power of Nurglundia, one which is the source of much trouble for their larger partner.
Tzeeland’s real-world influencers are primarily France and Spain, although Portugal and the Italian-States figure into the mix, quite heavily for the latter, in fact.
Slaavia is best compared to the Austro-Hungarian Empire and some of the Islamic portions of the Balkans, including also Greece.
Khornwallistein is a combination of Anglo-Saxon and western Germanic peoples; think of England (not Great Britain mind) and the principalities and bishoprics of the north-western parts of the Holy Roman Empire.
The most northern regions of the currently known map are inhabited by what we would recognize as the Scots/Irish, but with a greater variance, at least in appearance, between the highlanders and lowlanders.
There is a minor power that closely resembles the Turkish Empire as far as culture goes, notwithstanding the fact that Islam does not exist in my world, as neither do Judaism or Christianity. As I have previously stated, no real-world religion exists in mine. Karma can be a real pain.
The ancient origins of the four named major powers are inadequately known, but what the inhabitants of my world most agree on is that the principal ancestors of each of the major powers were once a part of the same faction in the old Remusian Empire, which fell precipitously following a series of natural disasters, including exploding volcanoes and at least one meteor impact. These families each escaped the disasters but their relationships with each other eventually succumbed to acrimony and violence, setting the stage for the modern era.
